Yakezie Challenge and New Friends

Posted by michelle on Feb 11, 2012 in Site News | 17 comments

When we started this site a few weeks ago, we stumbled upon a fellow Personal Finance blogger’s site (http://smallbudgetbigdreams.com), where I first learned about the Yakezie challenge. Yakezie is a wonderful blogging community, which encourages bloggers to support each others’ efforts and provides a community for folks to ask questions and get feedback from others. Basically, the challenge is to drive your Alexa score below 200,000 within six months of joining. The Alexa score is how high search engines rank your page and is based on how much traffic your site generates and how many of your beautiful friends post links to your site. (For example, our page is currently ranked 932,954. This means there are 932,953 pages ranked higher, and are basically more popular and awesome than ours.) Since our blog is still in diapers, we don’t expect to be the most amazing site in the world obviously, but we are excited to maybe one day be in the top 200k. We will continue to do our best to entertain you, inform you of amazing deals and money-making how-to’s, and to keep you posted on our Debt Reduction Progress.

New Friends

One of the great things about joining the Yakezie Challenge, is the exposure that you get to many other great financial blogs that are out there. We have a number of these listed on our blogroll on the right of this page, and you should make it a point to check out each of these sites if you are like us and trying to get out of debt, looking for good financial advice, or are just wanting to read some entertaining articles and viewpoints.

Just to make sure that you don’t miss any must-read articles from any of these new friends, we plan to post links from time to time to some of our favorites. Here are a few from the past week that caught our attention:

  • My Broken Coin (via Get Rich Slowly) – Why I lied about Money
  • American Debt Project: Top 10 Posts That Changed my Views on Money, Debt, & LIfe
  • So Over Debt — Pinterest: Harmless Fun or Enabler?
  • Budgeting in the Fun Stuff: My Tax Return and Me
  • Daily Money Shot: The Day My Kitchen Floor Melted
  • Frugal Dad: The “No Spend Day” challenge

Thanks for reading. I must say that this blog is helping us out so much more than I ever could have hoped. Since we are posting all of our trials (and errors) for the world to see, it is making us think about each and every purchase. We also appreciate all of the kind words of encouragement thus far. Just today, a good friend called to let us know that she was so inspired by our blog that she went out and consolidated her credit cards, taking advantage of the current Discover Card promotion that Jeff recently wrote about. This is saving her hundreds in interest each month and I’m so happy for her!

For sure, Kari! Everyone has been so helpful and nice (even though we probably have an annoying amount of questions.)
