I don’t know why I even have a smart phone some days. Today, I checked the weather on my phone and it tells me it’s going to rain. It’s not just going to sprinkle here and there. It’s going to rain cats and dogs all day, foiling my plans to take the kids to the zoo. When I tell Jeff that it’s going to rain, he looks outside and says that my phone is crazy and that it looks gorgeous outside.
I agreed that it looked gorgeous, so off we went. I’m so glad I didn’t listen to my phone, because it was the most beautiful, perfect day we’ve had all year! We all had a great time. Thankfully, we live in a city where the zoo is free. Parking costs $10, but that’s only if you park in their lot! Those in the know park on the street. Sure, it’s a 10-minute walk, but if you don’t like a lot of walking, you’re probably not going to go to the zoo in the first place. This was our 8-month-old’s second time at the zoo, but probably the first time that she paid any attention to the animals. She was very cute and sweet all day as were our boys. We packed some snacks and water, so ended up spending very little. The only money we spent all day was gas money to get there and $5.00 on two iced lemonades for our boys, which they totally deserved! You can’t beat that. I hope everyone’s weekend is going just as well.
My favorite post of the week was from My Broken Coin, where Aloysa’s 2-part true story talked about how her mother was a mail-order bride from Lithuania. It really is an amazing story and you should absolutely go read it immediately: PART 1 and PART 2. Why are you still here? Go read it!
Karl from Cult of Money wrote “Feedback, Compass For Success,” where he talked about the importance of feedback as a motivator to keep you moving forward. I agree with this whole-heartedly! I’ve been known to take things too personally at times in my life, but if you think about it, aren’t those little bits of feedback what pushed you to do more? Head over and say hi to Karl, and let the haters be your motivators!
Daisy from Just Add Vodka wrote a very entertaining post called “Ridiculous Things I Do to Save or Make Money.” Who knew being broke could be so hilarious?
Anthony from The Joyful Self Manager has been posting some very well researched and well thought out articles. My favorite was about how to get the negative voices out of your head.
Jana from Daily Money Shot brought the heat again this week with “My Husband I Don’t Fight About Money“. There are some things that Jeff and I disagree on (what to watch on tv and what constitutes as good music are normal arguments around here!), but thank goodness we are on the same page with our finances! That would be rough.
Average Joe from The Free Financial Advisor knows a ton about retirement accounts, and talked about setting goals and pretty charts this week. Joe knows what he’s talking about, so please head over and revel in his financial wisdom. What? You’re too young to think about retirement? Fine, but you should still stop by and check out his blog. He’s pretty entertaining.
Steve from Money Infant is one of the best new financial bloggers out there and has been more prolific than anyone. He had us cracking up with “13 Reasons NOT to Have a Budget- and 1 Reason You Should.”
Along For The Journey wrote about an anomaly in which discipline in one area of life can sometimes cause one to be more disciplined in all areas. I hope this is true since we are definitely tightening our budget belt!
Sicorra from Tackling Our Debt started some brainstorming in our little family with “3 Ways to Make Money in Your Own Neighborhood.”
Jason from Work Save Live, who is also an outstanding new personal finance blogger you should be following, wrote about “Six Things You Must Discuss Before You Get Married.” I know a few couples who really would have benefited from following this advice!

I love the zoo! Ours is pretty expensive, and then there’s parking and food too. Thanks for the mention!
I’ll never forget taking my son to the zoo on a day that was supposed to be mild per the weather. It ended up being about 90º and I thought we’d all pass out in our jeans and sneakers. Ugh!
Thanks for the roundup – I was MIA for most of the week, so this will help me catch up!
Hi Andrea! Welcome back
I did something similar yesterday with overdressing my kids, but it was only 70, not 90! Old me would’ve bought everyone overpriced zoo tees and shorts
New me just splurged on frozen lemonade.
I love zoo. We have one here, in Salt Lake, it is not too big but it is a good zoo. I love going there in the beginning of summer. One of my favorite activities.
Sort of.
Thank you so much for including me! Appreciate it so much. Don’t forget part 3 is out tomorrow. I am spilling it all.
Yay! I’ve been dying to find out if there’s a happy ending!
That’s great that your zoo is free. You guys can go quite often. Thanks for the include! Hope you guys have a great week
Thank you, Sicorra! You too!
Ah! Going to the zoo is one of my favorite things to do. It brings back beautiful childhood memories, and makes me feel like I’m 10 years ole all over again. I love the boxed lunches, the hikes, the scenery, and let’s not forget the animals. It’s a good thing you didn’t listen to your phone. Glad you and your kids had a great time. Oh, and thanks for the generous mention. That was very kind.
Hi! Found you through Fab Frugal. I’m pretty sure I follow you on twitter already though
Thanks for the round up of posts, off to go check em out. It’s so hard to keep up with all of the posts so I love when I see round ups!
Thanks for stopping by!
I agree that it is nice to have a recap sometimes.
Thank you for sharing great links.
OMG Michelle, you are going to have to teach me your time management secrets. I have no idea how you read every single article on the internet last week, but thanks for highlighting mine as one of the better ones!
I hadn’t been to the zoo in over 10 years, but now that we have a little one again we’ve gone twice this year. Once in Bangkok and once in Phuket. Both times were a lot of fun and a cheap day out. The zoo isn’t free here, but for Thai citizens it is close enough (good for the wife and daughter). Unfortunately as a foreigner I was stuck paying $10 to get in, which still isn’t bad.
I read very fast
We actually wanted to take our 2-yr old to the zoo this weekend but, it did rain
Just coming off of taking her to the circus the weekend before, we figured it would be fun. Oh well, we’ll make it one of these days.
Thanks for the post, I love coming across new blogs to add to my list to follow.
I haven’t been to the zoo in years. Sounds like a good time. I love lemonade.
Thanks for including me in the list. I’m also a good companion at field trips to the zoo. My wife often calls me a sloth, my kids a lion, and my parents still think I’m as adorable as the baby panda.
Sorry for the super slow response on this…just now getting caught up on the mentions (having a weekend away makes it tough to catch up on things!).
Thanks for including me!!
