Staying Dry

Posted by jefferson on Apr 22, 2012 in Site News | 10 comments

As you probably read, earlier this week we lost a few days of productivity when a glass of water spilled on our laptop.  After this happened, we removed as many parts as we could and let all of the water dry for a few days.  Earlier today, we attempted to power the laptop back on, and it worked perfectly! Wooooo!  In fact, I am typing on the laptop right now!  This saves us from having to empty our emergency fund to get a new laptop, and keeps our debt repayment schedule on track.

In other news, things have been very crazy at my day job lately, as my company is going through a big transition period.  With a busier work schedule, it makes it more difficult to find time to work on side hustles and follow through with our goal of creating an extra $200-$250 per month outside of my normal income.  I still have a couple of prospects, but nothing definitive, and I doubt we will make this goal for April.  That said, we have been doing a great job saving money (see here), and it probably makes up for it in the end.  The day job is what pays the bills, and will always get first priority.

Here on the website, we have been having a great month.  Yesterday was the third month anniversary of See Debt Run, and we have been having a blast sharing our stories and experiences with you all.  Our Alexa Ranking has now dropped down to well below 100,000, and our daily traffic continues to steadily increase.  Michelle and I are committed to continuing to improve the site’s content and design, and we have a number of new features that we are working on.  For example, if you click on Debt Reduction Progress in the upper left hand corner of this page, you will see that a real-time graph has been added to show our actual monthly progress when measured against our goal to be Debt Free by the end of February 2013.

Without a home computer for most of the week, we weren’t do as much reading as we normally do, but there were plenty of gems from around the web that deserved a quick shout out:

Awesome job so far to get Alexa below 100K in just 3 months. That may be a record. I also would love to hear how to generate income from your blog in the future. Thanks for the mention as well.

The fact that the laptop is fine is almost a miracle. Nice job removing the battery in time to save it. Congrats on the Alexa rank.

That’s great news! I’m glad that you were about to get your laptop back up and running to its usual form. But, I think that I had a lot to do with that because all of my hours of praying for a miracle (lol). I know, bad joke! My apologies! Seriously, good job on the save, and congratulations on the success of your blog.

Thanks for mentioning my post Jefferson. That’s awesome to hear that your laptop is alive and well. That must have been such a relief to see that power light turn on and the monitor load fine. Nice work on the alexa ranking and increasing traffic levels. You definitely deserve it with all that you put into this blog.

That’s a relief! I don’t just think about the money in a situation like that…there’s also the frustration of learning all the little ins and outs of the new machine and reconfiguring everything the way you want it.

Sounds like a week of good news for you! No new laptop, killing it on Alexa and traffic numbers, and writing great posts to boot! And thanks for the shout out!

That’s awesome about your laptop! I once had a first-generation iPod shuffle I left in workout clothes that got put in the laundry. Luckily, that did survive the wash after a thorough washing.

Good luck building your website – it’s been neat to see this new crop of very enthusiastic PF bloggers!
